Disqualifying: Angie Nixon Refuses to Acknowledge Cuba as a Communist Dictatorship

Florida Democrat Socialist candidate Angie Nixon would not answer a softball question from CBS News asking whether Cuba is a dictatorship. Instead she said, “that is what people have told me. I have never been to Cuba, and so I will have to take their word for it.” In full Socialist of America mode, Angie Nixon went further to criticize the United States and called for the return to Obama-era policies toward the island. These policies, that included an embarrassing trip by Barack Obama to Cuba where he cozied up to now indicted Raul Castro and thugs.

Angie Nixon failed the one test question regarding Cuba every Floridian knows: Cuba has been a dictatorship in every sense of the word for nearly seven decades. Elections are neither free nor fair, independent political parties are banned, the press is controlled by the state, and political prisoners are routinely jailed for challenging the regime.

Nixon’s response is especially striking given that she joined the Democratic Socialists of America which has long expressed solidarity with the Cuban regime and its revolution, and claims it is a victim of American policy rather than an authoritarian system that denies basic civic freedoms and human rights.

“Angie Nixon’s refusal to acknowledge that Cuba is a communist dictatorship is not just an insult to the countless Cuban Americans who have suffered under its brutal regime. It reveals just how far she has aligned herself with the Marxist wing of the Democratic Party,” said Republican Party of Florida Chairman Evan Power. “Either Nixon is ignorant of the history and suffering just 90 miles off Florida’s shores, or she is deliberately turning a blind eye to the atrocities of the Castro regime. Given her decision to join the Democratic Socialists of America, Floridians have every reason to believe it is the latter.”
