Growing into Leadership: Sgt. Richel Cespedes

NAVAL STATION GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba — U.S. Army Sgt. Richel Cespedes found her place in the Armyand now leads from the front with discipline, resilience and commitment.

A native of Tampa, Florida, and a military police team leader assigned to 293D Military Police Company, Cespedes is currently activated at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where she serves with Task Force Guard.

“My role is to lead and develop soldiers while ensuring they are both trained and disciplined enough to accomplish the mission,” said Cespedes. “I also help enforce the standard, all while ensuring my Soldiers understand their responsibilities and are ready to perform when needed.”

Cespedes enlisted in August of 2022 in search of greater challenges and the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than herself. The Army turned out to be a good fit for her.

“Growing up in Tampa taught me the importance of adapting to different people and environments,” she said. “It also taught me to stay determined, work for what I want, and not become discouraged when things do not go as planned. Such lessons have helped me adjust to new duty stations, leadership roles and challenges throughout my Army career.”

In the four years since, Cespedes has distinguished herself as an emerging leader, a role she embraces wholeheartedly.

“Serving my country means being willing and able to take on responsibilities that are bigger than myself,” said Cespedes. “It means showing up for my team, maintaining and exceeding the standards expected of me, and doing my part to accomplish the mission even when circumstances are challenging. One of my proudest accomplishments has been earning the rank of Sergeant and becoming a Team Leader. Being placed in a leadership position at such a young age has given me the opportunity to take what I have learned throughout my career and use it to help develop the soldiers within my team.”

“Sgt. Cespedes is a leader who invests deeply in her Soldiers’ development and welfare, challenging each of them to grow beyond their perceived limits,” said Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Wells, 293rd Military Police Company. “Through consistent encouragement and personal example, she inspires Soldiers to strengthen their physical readiness, build resilience, and meet the demanding standards required of a warfighter.”

Even as Cespedes looks forward to what comes next, she does so with a humble acknowledgement of her origins.

“I would like to thank my family, friends, and leaders who have supported and encouraged me throughout my Army career,” said Cespedes. “Each has contributed in some way or form to the leader I have become. I am forever grateful for the experiences the Army has challenged me with and helped me grow.”
