US Defense Secretary Says Cuba’s Future in Both Countries’ Hands

(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday that the future of Cuba will ultimately depend on decisions made by both the United States and Cuban leadership, while stressing that American forces remain prepared for any potential developments.

During a visit to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, he addressed US troops and described the facility as a strategically significant location for American interests.

He stated that responsibility for Cuba’s future lies at the highest political levels in both countries, saying: “What happens with the future of Cuba is in the hands of the president of the United States and the leadership of Cuba,”

He also underscored continued military readiness, noting that US forces will remain prepared for any scenario that may arise, regardless of political changes or future developments.

The remarks come amid ongoing US attention to the security and strategic importance of the Guantanamo Bay base and broader regional stability in the Caribbean.
