Russia strongly denounces US military action in Venezuela as “lawless”

(MENAFN) Russia strongly denounced the recent US military operation in Venezuela during a UN Security Council emergency session on Monday, calling Washington’s actions a dangerous return to “lawlessness.”

Russia’s UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia criticized the assault, saying, "The assault against the leader of Venezuela, compounded by the deaths of dozens of Venezuelan and Cuban citizens, in the eyes of many, has become a harbinger of a turn back to the era of lawlessness and US domination by force, chaos and lawlessness."

The operation, which resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, was labeled by Nebenzia as a “crime cynically perpetrated by the United States in Caracas” and an “act of armed aggression against Venezuela in breach of all international legal norms.” He called on the US to “immediately release the legitimately elected president of an independent state and his spouse” and stressed that any disputes between the two countries should be resolved through dialogue.

Nebenzia further accused the US of openly pursuing control over Venezuela’s resources, criticizing what he called Washington’s “unparalleled cynicism” in revealing the operation’s true aims: “the establishment of unbridled control over Venezuela's natural resources, and the assertion of their hegemonic ambitions.” He warned that these actions are generating “fresh momentum for neocolonialism and for imperialism.”

Highlighting the broader implications, Nebenzia stated, "The bell is ringing for all UN member states and for the future of the organization itself," and cautioned that remaining silent would effectively endorse violations of international law. “We cannot allow the United States to proclaim itself as some kind of a supreme judge,” he added.

The emergency session was convened following a formal request from Venezuela’s permanent mission to the UN on January 3, supported by China and Russia.
