Cuban Leader Says Sovereignty “Can Never” be Questioned in Talks with US
Speaking to Spanish media in Havana, Diaz-Canel said discussions could include foreign investment, migration, drug trafficking, counterterrorism, environmental protection, science, and education.
“We can discuss everything, but our sovereignty must be respected. Our independence and political system are never open to discussion,” he said.
Diaz-Canel described the negotiation process as a long-term effort, emphasizing the involvement of both government institutions and civil society organizations. He stressed that dialogue is preferred over conflict: “We do not want war; we want dialogue. But if we are subjected to military intervention, I am ready to give my life for the revolution.”
The Cuban leader also highlighted efforts to bolster domestic energy production and expand renewable energy to reduce reliance on foreign sources.
In related developments, US authorities imposed tariffs on goods from countries supplying oil to Cuba, citing national security and foreign policy concerns. While US officials announced in early February that discussions with Cuba regarding oil arrangements had begun, Cuba has denied such claims.
