Russia Pledges Oil and Petroleum Products Aid to Cuba

(MENAFN) Russia plans to send oil and petroleum products to Cuba as part of humanitarian assistance, the Russian Embassy in Havana said. Deliveries are expected in the near future to help the island cope with critical fuel shortages.

The embassy confirmed it is coordinating with Russian carrier Aeroflot and Cuban aviation authorities to ensure the safe return of Russian citizens, with evacuation flights from Varadero and Havana to Moscow being organized.

The Russian Ministry of Economic Development recently advised citizens to avoid traveling to Cuba and urged tour operators to suspend bookings due to an “extraordinary situation with fuel supply” on the island.

Cuba’s energy crisis worsened after Venezuela, previously a key oil supplier, was unable to deliver fuel following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3 and restrictions imposed by US authorities.
