US transfers Cuban migrants to Guantanamo despite court ruling
The men, reportedly the first Cuban citizens sent to Guantanamo since January, arrived on Sunday via an ICE air charter from Louisiana, as stated by reports citing sources familiar with the matter.
ICE has held approximately 730 men at Guantanamo, mostly from Latin American countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, and Venezuela.
Five of the newest arrivals were designated as “high-threat illegal aliens,” while the rest will reside in dormitory-style housing used for Caribbean migrants seeking asylum, according to a Department of Defense official cited in reports.
Guantanamo Bay is home to the infamous military prison where detainees have been held and, in some cases, subjected to torture since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
President Trump announced in January plans to use the detention facility to hold undocumented migrants. A federal judge in Washington recently ruled that the administration exceeded its authority in doing so.
Civil rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), have raised concerns about potential human rights violations at Guantanamo and called for immediate access for legal advocates to ensure due process and transparency.
